MEN’S HEALTH AND THE “ANDROPAUSE”

Dr Dobie has a particular interest in men’s health issues such as erectile dysfunction, poor libido and prostate disease.

Dr Dobie may prescribe testosterone supplements to men who have a low blood level of testosterone and symptoms of testosterone deficiency.

A low blood level of testosterone indicates poor production of testosterone by the testes.

Symptoms of low testosterone can include erectile dysfunction, poor libido, depression, fatigue, loss of muscle mass, weight gain and loss of motivation.  There is some evidence that low testosterone levels can increase the risk of heart disease.

Exercise, particularly the use of large muscle such as the thigh muscles, can help to boost testosterone levels.  Alcohol, drugs and smoking can reduce testosterone levels.

Testosterone supplementation can be provided in various forms – topical creams and gels, injections and troches, which are lozenge dissolved in the mouth.

Blood levels of testosterone decrease gradually from age 25.  Many men experience symptoms of low testosterone in middle age; this is sometimes referred to as the “andropause”.
